Located along the St. John River, this shopping district is set amongst a variety of historic architecture and has over 120 unique stores as well as over 20 attractions, all found in 16 blocks. Stores range from fashion boutiques to jewelery shops to wedding stores to handmade crafts shops.
Located on the eastern edge of downtown, and bounded by the Saint John River, Waterloo Row is a confluence of history and architecture. It is part of the Trans Canada Trail network, and is linked to the north bank of the river by the Trail Bridge.
British soldiers were stationed in Historic Garrison District from 1784 to 1869. Much of this legacy persists today in the many stone buildings that survive. Today it is host to shops, tours and live theatre. It was declared a National Historic Site by the Government of Canada in 1964.
From this site the beating of many different drums has been heard over the centuries - from the military marches of the British Army in 1785 and the Canadian Army in 1883 to the present day rhythm of musicans performing at the Summer Music Series. Come see the changing of the guard and inspection ceremonies during July and August. Also in Officer's Square is the statue dedicated to Lord Beaverbrook, a publishing giant and lawyer who assisted the first Canadian born British Prime Minister.
